Petition by air transport workers: State aid only in exchange for job security

In a joint action with the air transport unions, the employees of the industry appeal to the federal government: state support for air transport companies may only be given in return for employment guarantees. In view of the billions in aid need to save the industry, job security must be guaranteed.

Markus Wahl, President of Vereinigung Cockpit: "In order for the system to continue to function after the crisis, we need job security. Employees and companies in the aviation industry must therefore be equally protected.  We appeal to the German government that transparent action and job security must be the cornerstones for the distribution of taxpayers' money. Billions of euros in aid must only be given in exchange for job security.   Together with Verdi, the Cockpit Association supports the petition of air transport employees.

Petition
Appeal by aviation workers to retain all jobs and income in the face of upcoming state aid worth billions.

Dear Chancellor, ladies and gentlemen of the cabinet,

The aviation industry is currently on the ground. Hundreds of thousands of employees are or will be hit in the near future by short time work. Airlines, airports and service providers are running out of money. Nobody knows how the passenger volume, the airline structures and the airports will develop after the crisis. However, it is clear to everyone involved in our industry: civil aviation will be changing radically in the weeks and months to come.

A smooth restart of the industry under changed conditions will only be feasable if the aviation infrastructure is preserved. If we want to retain our infrastructure, not only the companies have to be protected from bankruptcies. We, the employees as the backbone of the industry must be protected from layoffs as well.

The industry will not make it without aid and support. If Germany wants to remain a strong and sustainable center of air traffic, the industry needs to be granted state aid immediately.

Recently some national air carriers are getting offers for loans worth billions by the state. Apart of demands with respect to short time working benefits, state loans as well as policies of nationalization are being discussed right now. Also airport operators and service providers are asking their shareholders, the federal government, the federal states and municipalities for financial aid.

We welcome all forms of help. We understand that the federal government wants to protect jobs. The ongoing and sustainable integrity of the civil aviation industry is of top priority to us.

This integrity can only be achieved by and with us. Because WE are the engine of the civil aviation industry. At present, many of us have been experiencing considerable income losses and don't know how to do make ends need. Fear of losing one's livelihood has been growing additionally, since no one of us knows if we will be carrying out our profession in the future.

This is why, when it comes to state aid for the civil aviation industry, we expect that our jobs and our income will be protected: State aid aids only if everyone is protected by it.

As an elected representative of the citizens, you are in charge of managing our tax money.

Thus we appeal to your responsibility. Taxpayers have a right to know how and what their money is used for. Transparent action and job retention must be the cornerstones of all state aid allocation.

We count on you!
