Ryanair: Exploratory talks continue – ballot vote until the end of July

Since the negotiations with Ryanair regarding improved working and salary conditions failed, exploratory talks discussed to what extent results could still be achieved before strikes might take place. Ryanair pilots have time to cast their ballot till the end of July.

For the first time, Ryanair management showed the ability to move in relation to structural changes of the CLA. However, at the same time, management made a clear statement that the collective agreements must not entail any increase in personnel costs.

"This is a clear refusal towards VCs’ position after all. Under such a premise, it will neither be possible to reduce the pilots' work load with a higher crew factor nor to realize better salaries. We don't need CLAs to solely fixate the current status quo.", said Ingolf Schumacher, head of Industrial Relations VC.

Ryanair is one of the few airlines where even experienced captains leave the company. This clearly shows the big dissatisfaction of pilots with the terms and conditions of employment and remuneration. The VC members at Ryanair demand similar conditions that exist at competitor airlines such as TUIfly and eurowings.

"Ryanair has to face the truth and acknowledge that the strain on its pilots is too high overall. You cannot take advantage of the legally maximum allowed flying hours for years on end, it's too much for anyone. Ryanair simply needs more cockpit personnel." Ingolf Schumacher adds and describes the next steps: "Ryanair and VC plan further exploratory talks during the ongoing ballot vote until the end of July. It's always important to keep the conversation going. We have had quite a few surprises with this company in the last months already, perhaps a turnaround in the talks is still possible - although it sure does not look like it."
