Vereinigung Cockpit demands comprehensive legal security for pilots on international flight duty

As the professional association of German airline pilots, the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) demands comprehensive legal security for cockpit crews in international service. It must be clear to all colleagues that they will not be subject to quarantine measures at international destinations and that they can continue their service.

Likewise, the international recognition of licenses that have been extended by the recently issued general ruling of the Federal Aviation Authority must be ensured. Pilots must also be able to rely on the recognition of the validity of these extensions in non-European countries but also within EASA's jurisdiction. Official arbitrariness in the interpretation of this order must be prevented.
The VC therefore calls on the Federal Government to stand up internationally for legal certainty in these matters. These measures are particularly necessary to maintain the systemically important cargo flight in the current pandemic situation.

Background

Pilots not only carry a high risk of infection in the course of the corona crisis, but we are also aware of cases in which colleagues have been affected by quarantine measures due to local regulations that often change at short notice. In some cases, international colleagues have already been placed in quarantine for two weeks. Such action by the authorities must not be tolerated, but must be ruled out.

The VC welcomes the issuance of the general ruling of the Federal Aviation Authority of 30 March 2020 on the extension of the validity of authorisations, certificates and registrations for pilots. These extensions will not be entered in the licences. Instead, pilots must carry the general ruling with them if they wish to make use of the extension regulations.

Also due to language barriers, problems with recognition cannot be excluded, which must not have negative consequences for pilots. Politicians are therefore called upon to ensure comprehensive international recognition.
